The Student Organization Center at Hilles opened in the fall of 2006 and has been designed to draw Harvard's vast, diverse, and stimulating network of student organizations together into one space that can support their individual goals while sparking new channels of conversation and collaboration. The College values experiential learning through co-curricular activities, and the SOCH provides a forum for this learning to occur.
The SOCH is open to all Harvard College students and student organizations, regardless of whether they hold office space in the Center. The open nature of the building, extensive technological resources, and unprecedented dedication of resources have been established to facilitate collaboration and strengthen relationships between groups, and to create a social space that fosters community. The SOCH Advisory Board, comprised of students and administrators, provides direction, feedback, and oversight for Center programs, facilities and activities. The SOCH hosts social programs and workshops designed to connect students, organizations, and their projects. It also provides a performance venue for student musicians, display space for student art, and a cinema for screening films. A yearly space allocation process, beginning each January for the following year, provides student groups the opportunity to apply for office or storage space.
All student organizations registered with the Harvard College Student Activities Office are welcome to host meetings, rehearsals, and events at the SOCH. With over 40,000 square feet of space on four floors, the building features event/conference facilities, recording studio, coffee bar and catering on the penthouse level; student organization offices, storage lockers, and mailboxes on the second and third levels; and a cinema on the ground level. There are two large multi-use function spaces, nine conference rooms, computer labs, color printer/copier, flat panel TVs, LCD projectors and a portable sound system.
