Sanskrit and Indian Studies
A secondary field in Sanskrit and Indian Studies enables students whose concentration is somewhat distant from the field to do a solid core of work in Sanskrit language and literature or South Asian studies without having the obligation of doing a joint thesis or culminating project. Students may focus on a coherent group of courses in Hindu or Buddhist tradition; in modern South Asian literature; in post-colonial studies; or in government or history. They may also choose a more general sampling of courses pertaining to areas of Sanskrit language and literature or South Asian studies.
REQUIREMENTS 6 half-courses
- At least two half-courses in a South Asian language.
- At least one foundational or wide-ranging course in the civilization of South Asia. Currently this could be met by regular Core Curriculum offerings as well as departmental offerings:
- Foreign Cultures 12
- Historical Studies A-16
- Literature and Arts C-18
- Indian Studies 110, 118
- Another course with the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
- Three additional half-courses in Sanskrit language and literature or South Asian studies, at least two of which must be at the 100 level or higher.
OTHER INFORMATION:
- Study Abroad/Summer School: Student language work undertaken in study abroad programs in India or summer intensive studies in the United States may be eligible for meeting the required language courses. Study abroad programs of a summer, a semester, or a year may be approved for credit toward the secondary field.
- Freshman Seminars: Relevant Freshman Seminars may be counted toward the secondary field, even though they are taken on a SAT/UNS basis.
- Pass/Fail: Other work in the secondary field should be in graded courses and seminars, except by petition to the Department.
